Ignacy Jana Paderewski Piano Competition
Bydgoszcz, 6-17 November 2001
On December 7, 2000 the Seym of the Republic of Poland adapted a resolution to make the year 2001, the Year of Ignacy Jan Paderewski. In this way Bydgoszcz, whose societies supporting music led to this event., became for the first 12 months of a new century the musical capital of Poland. Felicja Gwincińska was appointed the Chairman of the organizational committee, the president of the City Council and also the President of the Music Society.
An all-Polish inauguration of celebrations took place on February 16, 2001. The concert in the Pomeranian Philharmonic, with an orchestra conducted by Jerzy Maksymiuk performing Paderewski's Symphony H-Moll "Polonia" was the highlight of the event. The concert was visited by ministers, outstanding musicians, and people propagating culture from all over Poland, 900 persons in the audience. The 5th Piano competition was included into the jubilee celebrations and its inauguration according to established tradition took place in the concert hall of the Pomeranian Philharmonic.
Jerzy Maksymiuk conducted the Orchestra and Vladimir Miloševič, performing Fryderyk Chopin's piano Concerto F minor Op. 21 was the solist. During the second part of the concert Ludwig van Beethoven's VI Symphony F-Dur "Pastoral" Op. 68 was performed.
The president of the Republic of Poland took the event under his honorary patronage.
The competition was organized by: the I. J. Paderewski Society for Music, the I. J. Paderewski Pomeranian Philharmonic in Bydgoszcz, the F Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz. Cezary Nelkowski became the manager of the competition.
The contest, financed with the fund of the City Office in Bydgoszcz, Marshal's Office in Toruń, the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, with the significant support of private sponsors, took place from the 6th to 17th November, 2001 in the Pomeranian Philharmonic. Out of 89 young pianist who entered the competition, 34 candidates coming from: Belarus (1), Czech (2), Iran (1), Japan (1), Cuba (1), Poland (21), Russia (4), Ukraine, (3) qualified for auditions.
